Milestones and News
On May 5, 2009 IU President, Michael A. McRobbie issued a news release announcing a plan that called for the formation of two schools of public health in Indiana. You can view the milestones achieved and follow by year the progress to date below:
September 23, 2011 - Academic Council unanimously approved the proposal for the new Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
October 6, 2011 - Courtyard Dedication Ceremony and Naming of the Tony A. Mobley Auditorium, IU President Michael McRobbie presided.
October 14, 2011 - Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) unanimously approved IU’s request to rename the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation to Indiana University School of Public Health–Bloomington.
January 7, 2012 - School of Public Health Accreditation Self-Study Steering Committee initiates SPH accreditation self-study.
January 20, 2012 - IU Academic Leadership Council approves the addition of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of HPER.
January 23, 2012 - Staff update on transition and accreditation held.
February 7, 2012 - Faculty update on transition and accreditation held.
February 9, 2012 - Graduate Data Management Working-Group convened.
February 13, 2012 - Centers & Institutes Working-Group convened.
February 16, 2012 - Evaluation and Competency Assessment Working-Group convened.
February 16, 2012 - Student Affairs Working-Group convened.
February 17, 2012 - Workforce Development Working-Group convened.
March 8, 2012 - Dr. Kathleen Miner, Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health Associate Dean, meets as external consultant with select School faculty and staff on transition progress to date.
April 26, 2012 - Faculty approved revised School constitution and new by-laws.
May 7, 2012 - Application submitted to the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for a change in category from an accredited MPH Program to a School of Public Health.
June 23, 2012 - CEPH accepts application for Indiana University School of Public Health – Bloomington to initiate accreditation procedures.
July 18, 2012 - Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) grants Associate Membership to Indiana University School of Public Health–Bloomington.
August 1, 2012 - Dr. Ka He began his role as inaugural chair of the new Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
August 2 - 3, 2012 - Dean Torabi, Executive Associate Dean Gilbert, and Associate Dean Reece attended CEPH’s annual Accreditation Orientation Workshop, a required step toward accreditation.
September 28, 2012 - Naming Ceremony of the School of Public Health, presided over by IU President Michael A. McRobbie.
January 1, 2013 - Mohammad R. Torabi appointed Founding Dean of the School of Public Health.
March 5, 2013 - New MPH concentrations approved by IU Board of Trustees for fall 2013 offering include Family Health, Physical Activity, and Professional Health Education.
March 6, 2013 - Resources for creating and nurturing more effective community engagement were brought together under a new umbrella, the Office of Global and Community Health Partnerships.
April 2, 2013 - Faculty revised School Constitution established 11 Standing Committees and one Ad Hoc Committee within Academic Council.
